Everyone knows the saying "behind every successful man stands a woman." But why, exactly, does she stand behind him and not beside him? And why does she disappear from the stage of history when he achieves world fame? At the center of "Revolutionaries" stand three men whose revolutions remain relevant to each of us today; and beside them, their partners — whose contribution to these revolutions was never recognized. The play enters the Freud couple's bedroom and tries to uncover what part Martha Freud played in her husband's theories on female sexuality; it demands redress for the insult done to Jenny Marx, who was born a baroness but fought alongside her husband, Karl, for workers' rights; and it restores the honor of Xanthippe, Socrates's wife, who was unjustly turned into a symbol of a wicked woman who embittered her husband's life.
