'Winter Funeral' – a (somewhat) sad comedy by Hanoch Levin. One of the most brilliant and biting comedies Levin ever wrote, interwoven with timeless love songs that accompany the plot like a thread running through it. Latchek's mother has passed away, and he is determined to inform his relatives and hold a respectable, proper funeral for her. But his family is in the middle of preparations for the wedding of their younger daughter, Volotcha, a ceremony set to take place the very next day. Both sides understand well: a wedding and a funeral cannot coexist, certainly not on the same evening. And how could anyone possibly consider 'throwing four hundred guests and eight hundred chickens in the trash' just because an unplanned funeral has come up? From here begins a sleepwalking, comic, twist-filled race: the family twists and turns as best it can to avoid the harsh news that the desperate Latchek is trying to break to them. Maneuvers, evasions, and willful blindness create a wild dance of human absurdity — the kind only Hanoch Levin knew how to unravel with such cruel delicacy. Director: Matan Amsalem.
