The city is bustling, the world is trying to recover from the war, and Herman Broder wants to start over. He lives torn between two women: his wife, a Polish peasant who saved his life during the war, and a beautiful, wounded young woman he's drawn to, who sweeps him into a stormy, passionate affair — just as his first wife suddenly returns from the dead. Amid guilt, desire, survival, and ever more tangled lies, Herman tries to hold on to a future without looking back. But the past won't let go. This powerful work by Isaac Bashevis Singer — one of the great and influential writers of the 20th century and a Nobel laureate in literature — was adapted into a film that achieved worldwide success, was nominated for an Oscar, and became a modern classic. This stage adaptation offers a sharp, gripping, and shattering look at love, guilt, and the possibility — or illusion — of a new beginning.
