A poor miller, out of hope, stakes everything on a bold story: he presents his daughter to the king as someone able to work magic — spinning straw into gold. The king, his hands trembling from the financial crisis gnawing at his kingdom, clings to the story like a drowning man to a plank. He locks the lovely girl in a dark room, buries her under piles of straw, and orders her to prove her power by turning the wretched into the dazzling, the plain into the precious. Then, just as the last hope is about to die out, a small, restless, cunning imp wrapped in mystery emerges from the shadows and offers her a deal: help in exchange for tiny trinkets. Exhausted with fear, she agrees. But deals with creatures of the night never end peacefully. When she has nothing left to give, the imp asks for the most precious thing of all: her firstborn son, once he is born. Time takes its course, the child comes into the world, and the old promise returns to haunt her. The imp arrives to collect on his word and demands what is owed. But in the darkness he offers her one glimmer of mercy: if she can guess his true name — a name both secret and powerful — he will give up his claim. So she faces her final test, caught between despair and hope, between a sealed fate and the chance to undo it with a single name.
