Everyone knows the saying "behind every successful man stands a woman." But why, exactly, does she stand behind him and not beside him? And why does she vanish from the stage of history when he wins world fame? At the center of "Revolutionaries" stand three men whose revolutions remain relevant to every one of us to this day; and beside them, their partners — whose contribution to these revolutions has never been recognized. The play enters the bedroom of the Freud couple and tries to uncover Martha Freud's part in her husband's theories on female sexuality; it demands redress for the slight done to Jenny Marx, who was born a baroness but fought alongside her husband, Karl, for workers' rights; and it rescues the honor of Xanthippe, wife of Socrates, who was unjustly turned into a symbol of the wicked wife who embitters her husband's life.
