I haven't been in touch with him for years, but only today do I see how, in cutting myself off from this persona, from this authority, from my earliest connection to the world, it's as if I cut myself loose from some ship — a father-ship. As if I kept floating on a raft, navigating myself freely but without anchor or sail, as the ship slowly and heavily drifts away. A lie is a destabilizing thing, but also astonishing and full of magic — it creates a world with words. Just like a show. In that sense my father is a performer — he dramatizes, he impersonates. But when does the show end? Where does the line fall?
