Latecomers will not be admitted. Local elections are approaching, and the veteran, long-standing mayor, Moshe Schwartzman, is worried: he has no rival to run against him. Without a rival, there's no impressive campaign, and without a campaign, donors' wallets don't open. On top of that, people are already mocking him as a dictator, even as he insists that democracy is his highest value. So what's to be done? To create the impression of a fair, competitive election, they must invent a fictitious candidate — one whose "family will simply vote for him, and even they'll hesitate first." And when Ilana the cleaner walks into the office and starts scrubbing every corner, it's immediately clear to everyone: they've found the ideal candidate. Her name is Ilana — and she hasn't come just to wash faces, she's here to stay!
