A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen is a revolutionary modern classic that examines the personal price of a life run according to expectations, conventions, and predetermined roles. Nora Helmer appears to live inside a perfect picture: a successful husband, children, a well-kept home, and a promising financial future. On Christmas Eve, the family is preparing to celebrate Torvald's appointment as bank manager, but at this very moment a secret from the past that Nora worked hard to hide returns to haunt her. Krogstad, a bank employee fearing for his job, threatens to expose the truth. Nora tries to protect her family and the appearance of her life, and becomes trapped in a system of fear, lies, and pretense. As the pressure mounts, the relationship between her and her husband cracks, exposing the foundation on which their marriage was built. Through Nora's awakening, the play raises questions about partnership, personal freedom, responsibility, and a woman's place in a world that seeks to decide for her who she should be. The play, which sparked controversy from the moment of its publication, takes on renewed meaning in the era following the feminist revolution and the MeToo movement. In the Habima Theatre production, Shani Cohen plays Nora, a woman forced for the first time to look at her life without the masks and decorations of the perfect home — and to decide whether she will continue to play the role written for her or choose an independent path.
