In the stormy days of a violent and bloody coup, the powerful flee, leaving behind a helpless infant — the son of the deposed governor. Grusha, a simple kitchen maid, finds the baby and, in a brave act of kindness, decides to save him and flee to safety. As the winds of war subside, kind-hearted Grusha finds herself in a new battle when the governor's wife returns and demands to get her son back. Grusha and the mother are summoned to appear before Judge Azdak, who must rule to whom the child belongs — to the one who gave him life, or to the one who saved it?
