"An Israeli Love Story" is a monodrama based on the true story of the writer and playwright Pnina Gary, weaving together personal love with the historical events that shaped the state-to-be. In the summer of 1942, Margalit Drumi, a young woman from Nahalal, and Eli Ben-Zvi, a Palmach fighter and son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi (later the second President of the State of Israel), meet by chance on a bus to Jerusalem. The brief encounter grows into a great love, whose story unfolds over six fateful years. Through the relationship between Margalit and Eli, we discover an era of struggle, ideals, and pioneering spirit, alongside moments of coming-of-age, hope, and personal choice. Their story progresses alongside the events that led to the establishment of the state and the War of Independence, weaving in memories, songs, and characters from the spirit of the era. The show offers an intimate, human perspective on Israeli history: not just a sequence of national events, but a reality that penetrated the lives, dreams, and love of young people. The play was written inspired by the life of Pnina Gary, who served as artistic director of the Orna Porat Theater from 1981-1990 and continued as a member of the theater's management until her death in August 2023.
