Italo Gonzalez, one of the leading Latin singers in Israel, a true stage animal and audience favorite, known to many as the lead singer of the successful Buena Vista Social Club tribute, returns to Shablul with his band Sabor del Barrio for a tribute evening to Willie Colón, one of the all-time salsa greats, who passed away in February this year, leaving behind a magnificent musical legacy. Colón was one of the figures who shaped New York salsa and gave it its raw, bold, sweeping sound. Colón, born to a Puerto Rican family and raised in the Bronx, New York, was a groundbreaking trombonist, composer, arranger and producer. Already in the 1960s he began shaping the new sound of salsa, blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms with jazz, dominant brass instruments and urban energy. His legendary collaborations with Héctor Lavoe and Rubén Blades produced some of the most important albums in the genre's history, chief among them Siembra, which became a landmark in Latin music. Gonzalez, born in Chile, immigrated to Israel in 1995 and was the lead singer of the Jerusalem Salsa Band, one of the pioneers of salsa in Israel, which performed for eight years at the legendary Porto Loco club at the Tel Aviv Port and introduced many Israelis to South American music and culture for the first time. Over the years he has collaborated with David Broza, Boom Pam, Pablo Rosenberg and other artists. Now, together with the seven musicians of Sabor del Barrio, he brings Colón's music to Shablul in its full power: trombones, percussion, piano, bass and vocals, in an encounter of fiery rhythms, unforgettable melodies and a groove impossible to stay indifferent to. An evening of New York salsa at its best, music that goes straight to the heart and the feet.
