Miles Davis, one of the central and most influential figures in 20th-century jazz, led a series of musical revolutions throughout his career - from bebop through cool jazz to fusion. In 1959 he recorded Kind of Blue, an album that offered an entirely new direction: a shift from a complex harmonic approach to a modal approach, based on scales and creating a more open space for improvisation. Alongside Davis on the album played an extraordinary lineup that included John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb - a one-time meeting of musicians who deeply influenced the development of jazz. The music on the album is marked by clear simplicity and restraint, with open structures that let the melody and sound lead. Many of the recordings were made in just one or two takes, almost without rehearsal, with Davis giving the musicians minimal instructions in real time, giving the music a rare sense of spontaneity and a one-time moment. The album, which includes tracks like So What, Freddie Freeloader and Blue in Green, has over the years also become one of the best-selling albums in the history of jazz. Amit Friedman and a leading lineup of musicians will revisit the album's unique sound and bring to the stage the atmosphere, freedom and depth that continue to influence generations of musicians to this day.
