'Winter Funeral' – a (slightly) sad comedy by Hanoch Levin. One of the most brilliant and biting comedies Levin ever wrote, interwoven with timeless love songs that accompany the plot like a running thread. Latzek's mother has passed away, and he is determined to inform his relatives and give her a dignified, proper funeral. But his family is in the middle of preparations for the wedding of their youngest daughter, Volotshe, a ceremony set to take place the very next day. Both sides understand clearly: a wedding and a funeral cannot coexist, certainly not on the same evening. And how can one possibly imagine 'throwing four hundred guests and eight hundred chickens in the trash' just because an unplanned funeral has come up? From here begins a frantic, comic, twist-filled race: the family contorts itself every way it can to avoid the harsh news that the desperate Latzek is trying to break to them. Maneuvers, evasions, and willful blindness create a wild dance of human absurdity — one that only Hanoch Levin knew how to unravel with such cruel gentleness. Directed by: Matan Amsalem.
