The Israeli Flamenco Ensemble, founded and artistically directed by dancer and choreographer Michal Natan, celebrates 27 years of creative work with a new and dazzling show that reveals the full range flamenco art has to offer — not only as a dance rich in tradition, but as a relevant and contemporary art form, always open to being infused with something new and serving as raw material in the hands of its creator, who steers flamenco toward new realms of imagination. Many modern and contemporary works have been written and created inspired by ancient myths from various world cultures. Few of them have dealt with Canaanite mythology, whose stories were already put in writing as early as the 13th and 12th centuries BCE. The Israeli Flamenco Ensemble's new show is meant to bring to the stage the Canaanite spirit blowing from the stories of the local goddesses, who formed a significant part of the pantheon of gods. The show connects the ancient history of the Land of Israel with flamenco culture, which many of its people regard as a religion in every sense. The show "Ba'alot" was born inspired by the project "Kol Tavnit" ("Voice of Form"), a project of Canaanite-inspired songs written by the artist Assi Meshullam and composed by Talia Yona Kliger for the exhibition "Excavations – Art of the Present Moment", presented at the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem, curated by Shira Friedman.
