Doors open at 19:00. It's recommended to arrive close to doors-opening time for the show, part of the marathon event 'Flying to Vote – Invited to Perform.' A rare opportunity to enjoy wonderful Israeli musicians who have made their mark abroad, and also to show appreciation for the fact that they came from so far away, especially to take part in the elections. Joe Henderson, one of jazz's greats — a virtuoso tenor saxophonist and composer with a deep sound — had a sharp sense of rhythm and the ability to move between sweeping melodies and bold improvisation. In the 1960s he was one of the leading voices of the Blue Note record label, both on his own albums and on recordings with musicians such as Horace Silver and Lee Morgan. Already on his debut album, Page One, he performed Recorda Me, which became a jazz standard and stayed with him throughout his career. On the album Inner Urge he presented two different sides of his writing: the stormy title track, and Isotope, a playful blues he wrote as a tribute to Thelonious Monk. Alongside the small ensembles he often played in, Henderson also loved larger lineups — on the album Mode for Joe, his saxophone was joined by Lee Morgan's trumpet and Curtis Fuller's trombone. Saxophonist and composer Dor Verbin, active in the San Francisco jazz scene, made the long trip from the West Coast to take part in Israel's elections, and on that very day will lead a special sextet at Shablul performing Henderson's music. With three horns and a rhythm section, some pieces will be performed in Henderson's original arrangements, while others will feature new arrangements by Verbin. Among the pieces to be played: A Shade of Jade, Black, and Caribbean Fire Dance. A new three-horn arrangement of Jinrikisha or La Mesha may also be added. An excellent opportunity to hear the rich music of one of jazz's greats, and also to meet one of our finest representatives of West Coast jazz in the USA. Performers: Dor Verbin – tenor saxophone; Asa Kook – trumpet; Yoav Tripman – trombone; Ido Himovitz – piano; Gon Shani – bass; Gabriel Bar-Cohen – drums.
