Bustan Sephardi is a play that brings to the stage the spirit of life in a Jerusalem Sephardic neighborhood of days gone by, giving a place of honor to the Castel family at the center of the plot. Through small and large stories it unfolds relationships between men and women, bonds between fathers and sons, folk wisdom that sprouted in the stone courtyards, and a gentle Jerusalem sun that calls worshippers to the Selichot prayers. Within this human tapestry a fortune-teller also appears, neighbors whose lives are intertwined, and a girl marked by scandal whom the rabbi orders to leave the city — an act that stirs up painful dilemmas over the question of her burial. Among the characters, Ben-Zion stands out, an eccentric wanderer searching for the prophet Elijah, and alongside them all unfolds the tragedy of Victoria, accused of not having preserved her virginity, casting a heavy shadow over her fate. Between scenes are woven songs of love and longing, pain and joy — ancient romances passed down from generation to generation, still alive today in the voices of the Sephardic community, stirring deep emotion and the nostalgic scent of a world that once was and is no more.
