No latecomers will be admitted. As local elections approach, the veteran, long-serving mayor Moshe Schwartzman is worried: he has no rival to run against him. No rival means no impressive campaign, and without a campaign, donors' wallets stay closed. What's more, people are already mocking him as a dictator, even as he insists that democracy is his highest value. So what to do? To create the impression of a fair, competitive election, they must invent a fictional candidate — one whose 'own family will simply vote for him, and even they will have doubts.' And when Ilana the cleaner walks into the office and starts scrubbing every corner, it's immediately clear to everyone: they've found the ideal candidate.
