Why doesn't the law in India allow fetal sex testing? What is the origin of the custom of widow burning, and does it still exist today? Does the state place an emphasis on women's education? And how is it that India leads the world in the percentage of female pilots? Behind the trails of saris, golden jewelry, and colorful celebrations lies a different story: the story of millions of women in India, living within a complex social system in which gender is not just an identity - but a destiny. In this lecture, we'll be exposed to the everyday, present-day reality of millions of women. We'll see how early religious traditions and cultural practices still have a decisive influence on the lives of young women today, and learn why the common dowry custom leads to so many cases of murder.
