The brilliant, charismatic sound of the mandolin has been an inseparable part of Italy's musical landscape from the 18th century to today. Alongside its presence in chamber and amateur music, concertos were dedicated to it by none other than Antonio Vivaldi – one of the great composers of the late Italian Baroque. The Mezzo Ensemble hosts mandolin virtuoso Shmuel Elbaz and soprano Ya'ela Avital in a program centered on the meeting between the mandolin, the voice, and Baroque instruments. Alongside concertos by Vivaldi and cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, instrumental and vocal works from Italy and neighboring musical traditions will be heard, from the Renaissance to the late Baroque. Some of the works will be given new arrangements that bring out a different color, highlighting the flexibility, brilliance and special character of the mandolin.
