Joe, Max, and the dog Lassie set out together on a long journey full of adventure and danger — on the way home. Little Joe has no toys or fine clothes, but he has Lassie — his best friend, and also the most beautiful and cleverest dog in Greenall Bridge. All the villagers are amazed by Lassie and the tricks she performs, and she quickly catches the attention of the wealthy Duke of Darling, who decides to buy her from Joe's poor family and add her to his collection of dogs at the castle. When Joe discovers that Hynes, the Duke's cruel dog-handler, intends to take Lassie to be trained in faraway Scotland, he decides to break into the Duke's castle to rescue her — but the attempt fails, and Joe and his beloved dog find themselves stuck in the trunk of the car on the way to Scotland, together with Max, the Duke's timid and spoiled grandson. Partway there, Joe outwits the dog-handler and the three escape the car. Now they are in the middle of nowhere, far from home, and must find a way back to the village without being caught. The long journey home is full of adventure and danger, but all along the way Lassie's cleverness saves the two children from trouble. Slowly, Joe and Max turn from enemies into true friends — but will they manage to get home? And will they manage to save Lassie from the wicked dog-handler?
