Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra Andrew Parrott (England) — conductor Solo singers — to be announced Johann Sebastian Bach — "Easter Oratorio" (Oster-Oratorium), BWV 249 The "Easter Oratorio" will stand at the center of Bach Festival XI, presented by the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra. Returning to the conductor's podium is British conductor Andrew Parrott, with whom the orchestra recently marked 20 years of his tenure as conductor laureate. Bach first presented the oratorio in Leipzig on Easter Sunday in 1725. The four characters — Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Peter, and John — hurry to the tomb, moving together from mourning to the joy of the resurrection. The work opens with a festive sinfonia with trumpets and timpani, followed by a reflective adagio. Recitatives, solo arias, and choral movements turn the biblical story into a living drama, closing with a festive chorus of praise and thanksgiving. The full program of Bach Festival XI and the names of the soloists will be announced later.
