"An Israeli Love Story" is a one-woman play based on the true story of writer and playwright Pnina Gary, weaving together personal love with the historical events that shaped the state on its way to being founded. In the summer of 1942, Margalit Dromi, a young woman from Nahalal, and Eli Ben-Zvi, a Palmach fighter and son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi — who would later become Israel's second president — meet by chance on a bus to Jerusalem. The brief encounter turns into a great love, whose story unfolds over six fateful years. Through the relationship between Margalit and Eli, an era of struggle, ideals, and pioneering spirit is revealed, alongside moments of coming of age, hope, and personal choice. Their story progresses in parallel with the processes that led to the founding of the state and the War of Independence, weaving in memories, songs, and characters from the spirit of the time. The play offers a human and intimate look at Israeli history: not just a sequence of national events, but a reality that penetrated the lives, dreams, and love of young people. The play was written inspired by the life of Pnina Gary, who served as artistic director of the Orna Porat Theater from 1981–1990 and continued as a member of the theater's management until her death in August 2023.
