"Games in the Backyard," this remarkable and precise play, now returns to the stage in an innovative and gripping new version. A group of teenage boys invites a girl to play forbidden games in a garden at the edge of the kibbutz. The group dynamic turns the seemingly innocent teenage encounter into a scene of humiliation and gang rape. At the center of Edna Mazya's play, which has recently become an established Israeli classic, is a rape trial in which the victim becomes the prosecutor and the boys are forced to defend themselves. Like a sensitive X-ray, the play reconstructs that fateful day, in which the boys turned from teenagers into dangerous criminals, and she turned from a curious girl into a victim. The play "Games in the Backyard" is based on the rape case in Kibbutz Shomrat that shocked Israel and completely changed the patterns of criminal and moral discussion of rape cases — and far from having faded, it now seems more relevant than ever to a moral and ethical discussion of society's attitude toward sex crimes.
