Matzu Ensemble: Ya'ela Avital, soprano Dorit Florentin, recorders Orit Messer Yaakobi, baroque cello Gidon Bertler, baroque guitar Folk songs and popular tunes are born outside the concert hall, pass from mouth to ear, and change over time. Composers have turned to them again and again, drawing inspiration from them and seeing in them an expression of national identity and shared memory. They arranged them, recomposed them, and carried them from the street, the home, and the community to the written score and the concert stage. The program traces the transformations of well-known melodies from different periods and places: a Spanish romance by Alonso Mudarra and in the Ladino tradition, given a new interpretation by composer Yonatan Keren (Israel–Switzerland); Scottish and Irish songs arranged by Beethoven; the Beatles' "Yesterday" arranged by Luciano Berio; and also Bach chorales based on a folk song; alongside folk songs, dances, and traditional tunes that have received new interpretations throughout history.
