In 2021, a play premiered in Moscow about Russian women who left their homeland and married extremist Muslim men, jihad activists. The play won every major theater award in Russia. On May 4, 2023, authorities arrested playwright Svetlana Petriychuk and director Zhenia Berkovich, her creative partner, and sentenced them to six years in prison on charges of glorifying ISIS and promoting terrorism. They remain imprisoned, and their imprisonment sparked a massive wave of protest around the world. Acre Theater is proud to present the Israeli premiere of the play, under the title "My Sleeping Beauty," translated and directed by Prof. Roi Horowitz. A conversation with the audience will follow every performance. This is the first time the play will be staged outside of Russia. So far, no theater anywhere in the world has wanted to touch this hot potato. The creative team and the show's actresses (many of them former Soviet Union émigrées) will hold a short conversation with the audience after each performance, addressing questions of freedom of expression, the effectiveness of political theater, and the degrees of closeness and distance between Moscow and Jerusalem...
