The Israeli Chamber Orchestra Jerusalem opens its 2026/27 season and the "Instruments and Voices" series with the concert "Beethoven – In the Shadow of a Genius," conducted by Reinhard Goebel from Germany. The program brings together the music of Ludwig van Beethoven with other works from his musical world, ahead of the 200th anniversary of his death in 2027. Beethoven's Second Symphony stands at the heart of the program. Alongside it, Arcangelo Corelli's "La Folia" will be performed in an orchestral arrangement by Joseph Eybler, together with a symphony by Paul Wranitzky. The pairing of these works invites listeners to hear the familiar symphony in a broader context, and to hear how a Baroque-era theme takes on orchestral dress in the hands of a composer who was Beethoven's contemporary. The two symphonies on the program also share an intriguing detail: both carry the opus number 36. Concert Program Arcangelo Corelli – La Folia, arranged by Joseph Eybler. Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 2, Op. 36. Paul Wranitzky – Symphony, Op. 36. About conductor Reinhard Goebel Reinhard Goebel, founder of the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln, is engaged in the historically informed performance and study of the music he conducts. His attention to articulation, tempo, and orchestral sound also informs his work with chamber orchestras and modern symphony orchestras. Alongside the Baroque repertoire, he devotes considerable attention in his interpretive work to Beethoven and the composers of his time – a perspective especially suited to this concert program.
