An ongoing reality of pandemic, terror/war, and five rounds of elections created Antigone 2023. Sophocles' Antigone takes place against a backdrop of war and plague, carrying a family tragedy: two brothers who killed each other in a struggle for power. Antigone 2023 exposes the complete nakedness of power. It is ugly, unashamed of its own ignorance, racism, intrigue and defamation - a regime that steals the illusion of everything power is supposed to give: belonging, security, dignity and a future. We are alone. The life that existed before - there's no point looking for it now. Once again we are refugees of nothing and nobody inside our own home. Antigone 2023 carries with her the brother sentenced to death without burial, and Oedipus and Jocasta, her dead parents, within her. They are present at every step she takes against the regime, embodied by Creon, who decides who deserves burial and who doesn't, who deserves love and who doesn't, who lives and who dies. Today's Antigone is first and foremost a woman, and also an actress, who through theater looks at an impossible reality from the point of view of an Israeli woman. The art comes from the gut of the creators/actors. They are pulled out of the characters, they question, they hurt, they are ironic about the role and the situation they embody. Slowly, the actor blends with the character.
